SocIoT: A Society Enhanced with an IoT Network of Wearables and Surfaces to Improve our Quality of Life

The HAL exoskeleton developed by Professor Sankai at Tsukuba University

My mission is towards seamless embedded augmentation for enhancing our quality of life. This includes the ideation, design and invention of soft exoskeletons, smart suits, intelligent clothing and IoT surfaces with the core focus of improving human health and enhancing our daily interactions. When we imagine the society of the future, we often envision flying cars, robots roaming the streets and people donning augmented reality glasses for scanning their surroundings. These concepts have been recurring through popular media and are inevitable progressions in modern technology. However, my belief is that there are more core advancements needed to better our quality of life through a human-centric focus. The combination of embeddable sensors and artificial intelligence with wearables and surfaces can essentially transform anything into an IoT device and in turn create new interactive experiences. By taking a passive object like a jacket or a chair and enhancing it with my embeddable OS, it becomes a live, growing, updateable and enhancable IoT node. The culmination of these IoT nodes forms our own personal network based on our daily lives and needs. Our wearables can be uploaded with programs based on our training goals or rehabilitation routine - our work spaces can autonomously adapt to our work style to optimise for productivity.

SocIoT: IoT Powered Spaces for Human Augmentation (Design by Mitchell Cruz)

I am pioneering the new field of augmentation technologies for social implementation, what I believe is the next digital frontier in the computing age. Wearables, smart surfaces, exoskeletons, smart suits and robots that team up with us to make our lives truly easier.  I believe every individual will require a different kind of smart suit, exosuit or robot assistant in the future, and it is in my vision to create these adaptive and intelligent technologies. Personalized and purposeful embodied systems for the improvement of each individual’s quality of life.
